Memories

Shane Kimberlin

One night I went to bed, I was ten
Woke up I was thirty
Twenty years all blurryI′m not worried
It's just time′s in a hurry
I've asked God to slow it down before
But it's like he hasn′t heard me
In earlier times I kept my eye out for signs
The kind that mark when you cross a finish line
I lost the plot when I got so far behind
That the race I struggled through was more like a climb
But now I′m old enough to look back and know that
The road had been so bad but helped me grow up fast
Get less attached to brass rings, smoke screens
If I had a time machine I'd tell past Shane kindness is everything
Kindness is everything

Here′s another one

I played hockey as a kid for the Kenny Lake hawks
A wonky left wing, an odd duck made the coaches squawk
You ever done snow angels as a one-time goalie in the middle of a game?
Probably not
Some of us kids pretended to be wolves, digging holes
In the snow at Fahrenheit under thirty five below
Or Balto heading home to Nome with medicine in tow pulling a sled
With other dogs aka eight year-olds
Me and joby used to wake up early on Saturday
Watch cartoons unless Katie wanted to watch the game
Eat Froot Loops till the milk was goop
A sugar rush, then we'd go outside to play
Later on I′d be snowboarding with Jeremy and Dave
Road run Thompson Pass till the sun began to fade
A parcel of stars took its place
Packing up, we prayed none of this would ever change

Sometimes I go outside, drift to the breeze
Slip away in the present through branches of trees
This present moment is a present unwrapping me
The only gift to give back's accept and receive
Let memories overtake like a pile of leaves
I smile as I rake, combing all the moments spent in winter
Going too fast on a snowmachine in the back
Hookeybobbing, look mom, I′m hobbling
The sled wobbled too much, next thing you knew I was falling
Into snow and ice and rocks shot up
Like old dust among antiques like a bull in a china shop
It's time to stop, besides a new Tony Hawk game just dropped
Ride back home, go inside, pop in the disc
Skate the warehouse, two player bliss
Till we're on it so long we don′t know what time it is
Twenty years later not sure what time it is
So the mirror reflects back a full grown man
He can′t ever return, but I know I can

To the memories
To the memories
To the memories
To the memories
