A couple of months ago I decided to jet
To a galaxy far far away that I didn′t know yet
Take a trip flip the scriptGet away from all the bullshit
My son was grown my dog had a bone
For a long time my soul had been M.I.A
All I knew was there was only one place to go
So I packed my bags and flew to Califor-ni-a
They say it's the land of milk and honey
The land of opportunity
Not to mention it′s next to the sea
And later I learned
It's a land for seekers
It's a land for seekers
And California
You will be missed
When I got to C.A. I didn′t know what to expect
For the first couple weeks I just got wrecked
But I had family and friends that I needed to see
So I sent up a smoke signal with some green
And wouldn′t you know one by one I found my fam
Everyone was cool to hang, hot damn
There was Nathan and Jen, J and B
Cousin Ginna, cousin Tim, brother Derek, Vicky
Made my way from downtown San Diego to Ocean Beach
Now I got a little tip for ya
You'll get your la jollies at a place pronounced la-hoya
And the coast is two-letter acronyms all ending in B
IB and OB and MB and PB and VB
And California
You will be missed
From there I headed up to the mind fuck that is L.A
Hooked up with my friend Billy
He was generous and kind made me laugh until I cried
Helped me out in more ways than I can count because
Los Angeles almost killed me at first
But eventually I figured it out
That′s what it's all about
It′s all a big test to see if you're going to pout
So I kept my head up and thank goodness for the help
Without Bill, without Roxanne, without Mark, without Cass
Without Gabe, without Danika and Marie-Eve
I never would have made it, those angels would have eaten me alive
And California
You will be missed
Then I was on to San Francisco to where my brother roamed
And after 15 years apart he made me feel right at home
It was expensive there but like so many I fell in love from the start
I remember my mother saying it′s where she left her heart
I think Tony sang that part?
And then back to L.A. where I found a place in the hills
Recorded some songs and that was such a thrill
There was this country store where over coffee I wrote down this rag
I spied a cute girl and her dog
But before I could get up the courage
Another guy sat down to chat
Now as far as this sabbatical I am nearing the end
I've run through most of my money, not even sure if I can pay rent
But before I go I've got a little more time
To see a few more places, hear a few more rhymes
For 18 years I′ve been planning this excursion
Because 19 years ago I made a little person
The place was NYC, the Upper West Side
Where I lived with my girl, we ate Chinese, and drank free wine
Sometimes inside I feel sad and overwhelmed
That I haven′t achieved my dreams yet
But through this place and these beautiful people I've been reminded
That my family and my friends and my kid
Are the best things that I ever did
So to Chris, and Sarah, and Nick and Sarah, and Tim and Frank, and Maud
To Ben and Alex, and Ahmed, to Danika, Marie-Eve, and Todd
To Holly and Paul, Isabella, Carol, Julie, Morgan and Elena
To my cousins, to my brother, and any I might have forgot
To Jason and Billy, to the whole fuckin′ lot
I could not have done it without you
I could not have done it without you
I truly love you all a whole whole lot
California
California
California
You will be missed
