Six String

CHRIS MARTIN

Well he′s driving down the 61 in early July
Don't got no destination cuz the driving gets him high
He′s gotta flask in his pocket and a bottle waiting for him in the sky
He don't believe in jesus christ he says that's for fools
He′s rather be out smoking dope and breaking some rules
He says you only live once so what the hell does he gotta loose

Now he′s half through Wisconsin and he's running outta whiskey
Gotta make a quick stop making sure that he gets tipsy
He′s only 19 and burning a big hole in his wallet

He says I gotta make some money but he ain't gotta clue
On the street playing that old six string strumming out some 12 bar blues
His hats gettin full he thinks hey I should do this full time

Well his parents always said you′ll have to change your ways
Just wait till you get older and you'll see it someday
But he didn′t hear a single thing he was saying
Over that six string

Cuz in one ear and right out of the other
They said when you get older you'll be living in a shelter
But they didn't hear the way that he played
That beat up six string
He loved that six string
He called Lucy

He settles down in Memphis when he hits Tennessee
He meets a pretty young thang says her name is Jolene
She looks good in that dress but he thinks it′ll look better on the floor

Back to her house she says hey what′s that
He says what do you mean she says that six string in the back
He says that we'll that′s nothing but my pride and joy
And job

He's still in Tennessee three long months later
He′s living in her house but he thinks that he hates her
Cuz he's gettin tired of the same damn old thing

He says sorry Jolene I think I gotta go
She said what do you mean I thought this was your home
And he said no Jolene you just don′t understand

My homes my six string
I love my six string
I call Jolene

Now he's 23 he's heading down to Louisiana
He meets a new girl this time her names Roxana
And she ain′t making it easy for him and he likes to chase
Her down

2 years later and he thinks he really loves her
That chase must′ve been worth it cuz now he's met her mother
And Roxana always asks him to play that song he said he wrote her

On that beat up six string
He loves that six string
He called Roxanne

Well his parents always said you′ll have to change your ways
And now that he's older he′s seeing that day
Even though when he was younger didn't hear a thing they were saying
Over that six string

Cuz in one ear and right outta the other
Now he′s gotta girl he doesn't want a life without her
Now they're finally hearing the way that he plays

That beat up six string
He loves that six string
It saved him from a grave
